Seton Hall stuns No. 4 Michigan 67-65, making FTs key late

Ann Arbor, I. – Seton Hall withdrew One of her biggest wins in school history And coach Kevin Willard simply shrugged his shoulders because he wasn’t surprised by the result.

Jared Roden scored 16 points to help the Pirates beat Michigan No. 4 67-65 on Tuesday night.

It was Seton Hall’s first road win on a top-five noncon Conference ranked team, and his first win against a top-five team since Temple was ousted in the second round of the 2000 NCAA Championship.

Willard, in his twelfth season with the Buccaneers, said, “This is where we are as a show. I was expecting us to win this match. It was not a shock to me.”

“We can play anyone in the country and we’ve done that for the past seven years.”

Willard led Seton Hall to four consecutive NCAA Championship games from 2016 to 2019 before the pandemic ended a potentially promising stint two years ago and the COVID-19 outbreak halted his team last season.

Wolverines (2-1) had a chance to extend the game with 0.8 seconds left, but Terrance Williams missed his first two free throws.

Unlike the 1989 National Championship game in which Rommel Robinson made free throws to capture Michigan’s victory over Seton Hall, the Corn and Blue did not follow the same scenario.

Willard said, “I’ve watched the game five times. It was a great match. It was like this, a really good basketball game.”

Pirates (3-0) trailed by 11 points early in the second half, took the lead in the game with 1:15 remaining for the first time since the late first half.

“There were a lot of defensive mistakes made in the 40 minutes of play,” Michigan coach Joan Howard said.

Bryce Aiken made two free throws 32 seconds left to give Seton Hall the 65-64 lead that he maintained after Michigan’s Eli Brooks missed a short shot in possession.

Miles Cal made the second of two free throws, giving the visitors a two-point lead that proved to be the difference.

“We did (free throws) and they missed a hard throw,” Willard said.

Aiken, who was 4 of 6 on the line, and Trey Jackson of Detroit each had 13 Buccaneers points.

Hunter Dickinson of Michigan scored 18 points and had nine rebounds, Brooks scored 17 points and Devante Jones added 11 points and 12 rebounds.

Brooks lamented what the Wolverines did so offensively late in the game.

“Just looking after the ball, making sure we get a shot every time on the floor, that’s very important,” he said.

The Wolverines were 3 of 15 on 3 throws and only made 42% of their shots overall.

“If you get 68 points a game, you win that game more often,” Brooks said. “We didn’t do a good job assessing basketball.”

The Big Picture

Seton Hall: After defeating Fairley Dickinson and Yale, a squad of five alumni on the roster showed they had the experience and talent to take on one of the best teams in the country.

Michigan: The team that had been speaking publicly about winning the National Championship felt humiliated, losing a home game after taking a double-digit lead after appearing to slip away early in the second half.

new deal

Two hours before the game, Michigan announced that Howard had agreed to a five-year contract extension through the 2025-26 season.
