Boston – Anais Kanter, Boston Celtics Center, changed his name to “Annis Kanter’s Freedom” to celebrate his becoming a US citizen.

Kanter’s manager, Hank Vitek, told The Associated Press that Kanter will hold a citizenship oath ceremony on Monday afternoon, at the same time he will complete his legal name change.

The news was first reported by Athletic.

Kanter, 29, a native of Turkey, has been an outspoken critic of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and the Turkish government. Kanter said his passport was revoked by his home country in 2017.

The 2011 first round draft was also taken to social media in support of Tibetan independence and criticism of China’s treatment of the Uyghur people. During the games, he wears shoes emblazoned with the saying “Free Tibet” and advocates for a boycott of the 2022 Beijing Olympics.
