Muguruza beat Kontaveit to reach WTA semi-finals

Guadalajara Garbiñe Muguruza ended Anett Kontaveit’s 12-game winning streak with a 6-4, 6-4 victory on Sunday that propelled her to the semifinals of the WTA Finals.

Muguruza, who will play in her first semi-final at this tournament since 2015, needed a win to advance to the semi-finals over Wimbledon finalist Karolina Pliskova. Kontaveit had already confirmed her place in the semi-finals before her last group stage match.

Muguruza avenged the recent loss to Kontaveit, which she beat in just 48 minutes in the Kremlin Cup quarter-final in Moscow last month.

“I got better and found myself, and today I knew it was a match I had to win and I went out to get it,” said Muguruza. “I had to finish Annette’s streak, she was invincible on the tour and fortunately she did.”

Muguruza got an early break and then saved two break points to take the first set against Kontaveit, who didn’t appear to be settling into the night game.

“She wasn’t top of her game tonight, and I can see, she might have already qualified for the semi-finals and it had something to do with it,” Muguruza added.

The WTA Finals are played in a tournament format with the best players from each group progressing.

The semi-final matches will be played on Tuesday and the final will be played on Wednesday at Centro Panamericano de Tenes in Zapopan.

Pliskova rebounded from a set and broke to defeat Barbora Krezhikova 0-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the previous match to preserve a chance of reaching the semi-finals, but came out with Muguruza’s victory.

“A horrible start obviously, terrible first set. I think it was a combination of I didn’t play really well and (she) was playing amazing,” Pliskova said. Although it wasn’t great.”

French Open champion Kryzhikova finished the singles tournament 0-3, but is still alive in the doubles alongside Katerina Siniakova.

“I think I’ve had a great season. I’ve been doing really well all season and now it’s very disappointing,” Krijikova said. “I really want to do well in my doubles with my partner. I’ll just keep going, stay focused.”

The WTA Finals are only being held in Guadalajara this year, with the event set to return in 2022 to Shenzhen, China.
