Medvedev beats Hurkacz in the opening match of the ATP Finals

Turin – Powerful serving and consistent basic play propelled US Open champion Daniil Medvedev to a 6-7 (5) 6-3 6-4 victory over first-time qualifier Hubert Hurkacz in the opening match of the ATP Finals on Sunday.

Medvedev, the year-end best-eight champion, sent 15 aces and didn’t face a single break point against seventh seed Hurkacz, who he beat in five sets at Wimbledon this year.

The win gave Medvedev an early advantage in the red group, which also includes 2018 champion Alexander Zverev and local hope Matteo Berrettini of Italy, who later played in the first edition of the event in Turin – 12 years later in London.

In the green group of the quarterfinal format, top seed Novak Djokovic opened against eighth seed Kasper Ruud on Monday, then fourth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas will play fifth seed Andrei Rublev.

With both players performing well inside the Pala Alpitour, neither Medvedev nor Hurkacz scored a break point in the first set, when Hurkacz’s powerful net proved the difference in the tiebreak.

Medvedev responded with an early break in the second set and then broke again in the first half of the third set as Hurkacz was systematically dressed.
