Kansas loses slip and stuns Texas 57-56 VOT

Jalon Daniels hit Jared Casey in a fast pass to convert two points in overtime and stunned the Kansas Texans 57-56 Saturday night to smash the Jayhawks’ eight-game losing streak this season and a 56-game losing streak in the Big 12 road games.

The Texans rose from 21 down in the second half to force overtime on a Casey Thompson pass to Cady Brewer with 22 seconds left.

Texans got the ball first in overtime and scored as Marcus Washington tried to catch the ball. But KS (2-8, 1-6 Big 12) answered by landing Devin Neale for 2 yards.

First-year Kansas coach Lance Leibold immediately decided to go ahead for the win, and the Kansas players stormed the field when a late quarterback Daniels Casey found a scramble across the middle of the field and the lineback quietly made the pitch to score.

The Texans (4-6, 2-5) started 4-1 under first-year coach Steve Sarkissian, but have now lost five in a row for the first time since 1956.

Daniels passed for 202 yards and three touchdowns and ran to score. Neal rushed for 143 yards and three touchdowns for Jayhawk, who has not won a road match in the Big 12 since 2008. The Jayhawks’ defense forced four turnovers in Texas.

Thompson finished the 358-yard pass with six touchdowns for the Longhorns, who must win his last two games to qualify for the ball.

Kansas has not scored more than 33 points in a game this season and won 35 points at the end of the first half.

the ticket

KS: The Jayhawks took a much-needed mega win on the program with great play from Daniels and bold decision making from Leipold. The Jayhawks had a fight with Oklahoma earlier this season only to let that guy get away. A win like this down the road can only build momentum for Leipold’s long rebuilding.

Texas: It’s a huge loss for a program that started the season in the rankings but has had a complete breakdown. Rather than ceding his lead in the second half this week, the Longhorns never led this one. To make matters worse: a prominent Bijan Robinson who had his back left the match in the third quarter with an apparent injury to his arm or shoulder.
