Fox, Heald Kings lead Lakers 141-137 in triple overtime

Angels – Diaron Fox scored 34 points, Buddy Heald scored 13 of 25 after the regulation, and the Sacramento Kings beat the Los Angeles Lakers 141-137 in three times overtime Friday night.

In a game that saw 19 draws and 23 lead changes, the Lakers advanced 126-124 in the third minute of third overtime when the Kings advanced 11-2 to lead by seven with 1:54 remaining. Marvin Bagley III scored five points during the boom, including a three-point play to give Sacramento the lead.

Carmelo Anthony hit a three-pointer with 9.4 seconds left to put the Lakers inside a basket, but Held dropped a pair of free throws on the ensuing possession to put it away.

Therese Halliburton scored 19 points for the Kings who had seven double-digit players. They are 2-1 under interim coach Alvin Gentry.

The Lakers, who are 10-11 years old after losing five of their last seven, had four players with at least 20 points in their first time this season. LeBron James led with 30 points, Russell Westbrook added 29, Anthony Davis 23 and Malik Monk 20.


The Lakers scored their first six points in first overtime and were up 110-103 before the Kings scored seven points in a row, including a Hield 3 pointer to equalize with 28 seconds left. Davis grabbed a driving corner with 9.0 seconds remaining, but Sacramento forced an overtime shot on Hield’s 18-foot jump.

The biggest advance anyone made in second overtime was three points. James made a corner kick 24 seconds ago to equalize the score at 124. Sacramento had the last ball, but he couldn’t hit the ball.

How did we get to work overtime

Monk scored 11 points during a 24-8 round in the second half. The Lakers transformed their deficit by three points with 4 minutes, to go in the third quarter to 86-73, an advantage with 10:02 remaining.

The Kings were to beat 22-5, including eight points from Alex Lane, to grab a 98-93 advantage with 2:26 to go. Despite this, Los Angeles scored seven of its last nine organizational points to send it into overtime.


After a corner kick from James gave the Lakers a 100-98 advantage, Fox tied a corner kick with 21 seconds left. The Lakers got the last shot, but James missed a three-pointer at the bell to send him into overtime.


Kings: This was the Fox’s second game of the season with at least 30 points. He scored 37 on November 10 in San Antonio. …Terrence Davis had 13 points before he spoiled overtime. … Harrison Barnes (right foot sprain) and Richon Holmes (right eye contusion) were out of the squad.

Lakers: Anthony (16 points) was 6 out of 13 from the field after playing 7 of 27 in the previous two games. …this was Monk’s third game with at least 20 points since he joined Los Angeles during the season. … Davis hit 800 steals in his career when he stripped the ball from Fox during the first overtime.
