Doncic is back, the Mavericks beat the Clippers later in order to slip

Angels – It would have been understandable if the Dallas Mavericks had finished overtime against the Los Angeles Clippers with a 10-point lead.

Kristaps Porzingis and Luka Doncic weren’t about to let that happen, and they dominated the last five minutes.

Porzingis scored 30 points, including six in overtime, and Doncic scored 26 points on his return to the squad as the Mavericks beat the Clippers 112-104 on Tuesday night.

“For a second you’re disappointed that we should have finished them (on the list), but I think we’re growing mentally as a team,” said Porzingis, who has scored 20 points or more in seven straight games. “We knew it was another five minutes and we got out there and proved that we were the superior team.”

The Mavericks were leading 102-92 late in the fourth quarter before the Clippers scored 11 of their last 12 points to force overtime, including 3-pointers from Paul George at the bell.

“That second it felt like it was forever. I think I just got free and let it fly,” said George.

Despite this, Dallas put in the first seven points of overtime and beat Los Angeles 9-1 to score a three-game slip that included a six-point loss to the Clippers on Sunday.

Doncic, who has missed the past three games with a sprained left knee and ankle, scored nine rebounds and nine assists in 41 minutes.

Dallas trailed by six points at the end of the first half, but scored 38 points in the third quarter to take the 80-76 advantage in the last 12 minutes. Donči had 15 points in this period and four assists which resulted in an additional 10 Mavericks points.

“Extra time in the first game? That’s tough. But we got the win and I’m happy,” Donči said.

Dallas head coach Jason Kidd was pleased with the way his two stars played, especially Porsenges, who fired his 10 free throws in 40 minutes of excitement.

“He plays at a very high level. He didn’t force anything. Sometimes when a star player comes back, others might change their playing style but he didn’t,” Kidd said. “Luca’s preparatory work in the past two days has been at a high level. He has a great feeling and there is a lot of confidence that the other players will play.”

Reggie Jackson led the Clippers with 31 points, his most in two and a half seasons with the team. George scored 26.

Jackson hit a triple pointer with 4.2 seconds left to take Los Angeles within 102-100. Then George Maxi Kleber missed with 1.9 seconds remaining. Kleber made a first free throw, but missed the second. George grabbed the rebound and called a timeout with 1.1 seconds remaining.

After the Clippers transferred the ball to the middle area, Terrence Mann passed to George, who shot 3 pointers from the right corner to send it into overtime.

“We wanted to take pictures. Terrance made a good pass and he made a big shot for us,” Clippers coach Tyrone Low said.

The two teams were facing each other for the second time in three days and things sometimes went wrong. Dončić received a technical foul late in the first quarter to mock Man. The two teams – who didn’t meet again until February – don’t have many warm feelings for each other after a controversial streak of playoffs last season that the Clippers won in seven games after trailing 3-1.

“Two great teams. Great players. So many similarities,” said Jackson, who also scored 10 rebounds. I think we will continue to fight big battles.”

The Mavericks were 6 of 30 three-shooters in a loss on Sunday and started Tuesday’s game and missed their first 13 from outside the arc before preparing to warm up. They went 12 for 26 the rest of the match.
