Washington — The White House says about 10% of eligible children ages 5 to 11 have received a dose of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine since it was approved for their age group two weeks ago.

At least 2.6 million children received a dose, White House Coordinator Jeff Zents said Wednesday, with 1.7 million doses in the last week alone, nearly double the pace of the first week after approval. It is three times faster than the adult vaccination rate at the start of the country’s vaccination campaign 11 months ago.

There are now 30,000 sites for children to get an injection, Zentz said, up from 20,000 last week, and that the administration expects the frequency of children’s injections to increase in the coming days.

Children who get their first dose of the vaccine by the end of this week will be fully vaccinated by Christmas, assuming they get the second vaccine three weeks after the first.

The White House has been ramping up its efforts to promote child vaccination, with First Lady Jill Biden and singer Ciara recording a video on Wednesday encouraging children to be photographed.

The first lady also visited the Washington Pediatrics facility with Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy and Alisha Clark of the Washington Mystics and Thomas Bryant of the Washington Wizards.

“You are the real heroes,” Biden told the newly vaccinated children. “You have your superpowers and you are now protected from COVID.”

Biden also warned parents of misinformation about vaccines and emphasized their safety.

β€œI want you to remember and share with other parents: the vaccine protects your children from COVID-19,” she said. β€œIt has been rigorously reviewed and rigorously tested. It’s safe. It’s free, and available to every child in this country from age 5 and up.”
