The first black firefighter in Florida was depicted as white in a mural
Boynton Beach, Florida. Boynton Beach’s first black firefighter is suing the city now that a city mural has been painted and depicted as white.
The mural was painted on the window of a new fire station last year sponsored by the city. Latusha Clemons notes that not only does her skin color change in the mural, but that the former fire chief, Glenn Joseph, is also black.
Clemons is suing the city for defamation, slander, and negligence. She is seeking more than $30,000 in mental and emotional damages. The original image that was used to paint the mural included Clemons and two white firefighters.
In return, the city denied the allegations and apologized to Clemons.
Two city officials who participated in the same mural last year were fired. The mural was removed immediately.
