Jacksonville dad gets free cataract surgery
Jacksonville, Florida. Willie Cervanse is in dire need of surgery to save his eyesight, but his insurance won’t cover the cost. That was when Dr. Ravi Patel of Florida Eye Specialists stepped in and did the surgery for free.
Servance loves being a father to his two children and working as a funeral assistant. He has been in this industry for more than 20 years. He struggled to do simple tasks like helping his son with his homework, or doing paperwork at his job became stressful. It was even a struggle for him to drive at night.
A cataract occurs when the lens in the eye becomes cloudy or hazy over time.
Servance developed cataracts at just 38 years of age which is the condition usually for people in their 60s. One of the reasons Cervanse got so early on is that he has diabetes.
“Diabetics are three to four times more likely to develop cataracts,” Dr. Patel said.
After months of severe vision problems, Cervanse knew he needed help quickly. Cataract surgery was the solution.
“You know eventually,” he said, “that either you’re going to lose your vision or it’s going to get worse than it already is.”
Dr. Patel performed the surgery in October 2021, and each procedure took about 15 minutes for a week. After speaking with Cervanse following the procedures, Dr. Patel said he loved hearing the joy in his voice.
“I can see everything much better now after cataract surgery than ever before,” Cervans said.
Dr. Patel said there are many things people can do to make sure their cataracts don’t reach this point.
One thing is to have an eye exam once a year. He also said that it is essential to see a doctor as soon as you notice something different about your health, as this leads to early detection and provides more options for solutions.
