Blood banks in need before the holidays: how you can help

Jacksonville, Florida. It is the season of giving and blood banks in the country are in dire need of donors

OneBlood hosted a blood drive at TIAA Bank Square on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., after a tough year.

The organization’s spokesperson, Pat Michaels, told News4Jax that the holiday season is making it worse.

“It has been difficult for blood centers during the pandemic to keep donors coming in to donate. People abroad are backpacking. When they do it while they are on vacation during the holidays, the process of thinking about donating blood is just not there,” Michaels said.

OneBlood’s blood donation campaign comes with a special incentive. Donors will receive a ticket to the next Jaguars match.

This alone was enough incentive for Rebecca and Joshua Lester to donate.

I know how important a donation is. “I know they always have a shortage and everything and that helps to have the advantage of being able to go to the Jaguars game,” said Rebecca Lister.

“It’s my chance to help, and I feel I should,” said Joshua Lister.

All blood types are needed, but especially the “mass donor” type O negative. Those aged 17 or over can donate.

OneBlood receives donations throughout the year.
