A nine-year-old girl fights the robber who attacked her mother

A nine-year-old girl took home the championship medal after she fought off a thief who attacked her mother while she was out shopping in West Palm Beach, Florida.

Nelson’s flight can be seen in surveillance footage battling the thief after he attempted to seize her mother’s bag on November 2.

“I resisted. I had to save my mother,” she told reporters.

Her mother, Danielle Mobley, struggled with the thief – who has since been named by police as Demetrius Jackson.

“We fought for the wallet. He pushed me to the floor,” Mrs. Mobley said.

The ride set off for work, hitting Jackson in the face before he shoved her down and started running.

“That’s when I let it go and I expected it to take off,” Mobley said. “I wasn’t expecting her to take off after him.”

The nine-year-old chased the man for five blocks but failed to catch him, 7 Miami News reports. He was arrested two days after the attack.

On Thursday, West Palm Beach Police Chief Frank Adderley gave Journee a medal and a certificate of her heroism.

“I wouldn’t recommend that you encounter someone like this but in the midst of a moment things happen,” he said.

“I bet he was shocked when I hit him right in the face because he can definitely tell in the video that he wasn’t expecting it, and her actions were perfectly timed in this particular situation.”

“I think she hit him hard,” he added.

“I am very proud of her that this was her initial reaction,” said Ms. Mobley. “I wish, sometimes, things were a little different because she’s still dealing with this mentally.”

Jackson has since been charged with theft and battery.
